The 72-Bed Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sunrise Children’s Hospital serves critically ill newborns and premature infants who require medical or surgical intervention. More than 750 babies a year are cared for in this unit by a comprehensive team of clinical experts.

NICU Pod
The NICU at Sunrise Children’s is the largest, most advanced NICU in the state with 6 pods totaling 72 beds. The design of the NICU was strategic and deliberate in order to provide a restful environment to facilitate optimal development of these tiny infants as well as keep the nurses close to the bedside, accommodate families’ needs and aid in infection control.
Private Rooms
Private NICU rooms are available for newborns requiring special precautions or special needs.
Home Rooms
For many patients, bringing a newborn home after weeks and sometimes months in the hospital can be overwhelming. That’s why we provide two home rooms where parents stay overnight with their baby and can get comfortable waking for feedings and giving medications. A nurse is always close by and available at all times to help or step in if needed.
In addition to board-certified neonatalogists, the newborn care team consists of specialty-trained nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, charge nurses, respiratory practitioners, social workers, case manager/discharge planner, developmental specialists, lactation specialists and support staff who are in the unit round-the-clock, dedicated to tiny patients and their families.

The NICU is well supported by a vast team of pediatric sub specialists who are available for consultation and treatment. Should an infant need to be transported to Sunrise Children’s for care, our NICU Transport Team is available at a moment’s notice.
Treatment and care is state-of-the-art and includes modalities such as: nitric oxide, high-frequency ventilation, latest methods for surgical and non-surgical treatment for cardiac, neurosurgical and GI conditions. The NICU utilizes specialty infant beds designed for the safe monitoring and stable environment that high-risk infants require. To ensure safe medication administration, Sunrise Children’s Hospital uses the most advanced pharmacy safety measures and has a dedicated infant/pediatric pharmacy staffed by trained pediatric pharmacists. The teams in the NICU include experts who place specialized IV lines and respond to high-risk newborn deliveries. All these measures ensure the highest level of care for the most fragile infants. In addition, families are provided additional support through child safety and CPR classes as well as sibling classes.
